Updating to a current version of the Microsoft software is important:
- Older versions of the web browser (Internet Explorer) don't display pages correctly if the pag uses JavaScript
- a method to give the html web page some itelligence or animation.
- Even Internet Explorer 5.0 and 5.01 can have problems displaying pages, because this is during the time when
Microsoft got sued by Sun for using Sun's Java programming language but forgetting to License it.
So, the most recent copy of Internet Explorer or verion 5.5 will get you over the hump.
Netscape 4.7 also has problems I hear, so at this point sticking with Internet Explorer is probably the best.
- Older versions of Outlook Express email software will stop to function. OE needs to be updated to a current version.
Many of the problems stem from Y2K. I have seen computers begin to have problems in January 2000, April 2000, October
2000 and even January 2001! It just STOPS sending or receiving correctly.
To resolve the situation, current versions of Microsoft's software should be downloaded.
Go to WindowsUpdate.Microsoft.Com and click on Product Updates.
This will download a Java Applet that can determine which updates are (a) critical, (b) nice to have, and (c) demos
of other software products.
ONLY click to download ONE update at a time. It will reboot after the install.
Remember to disconnect from 1USA before rebooting.
If there are 6 things listed in the Critical Section (at the
top of the page) then you need to reboot between each one and come back for one at a time. People's computers
have been known to go Belly-Up by downloading more than one at a time.
The 1USA Newsletters say to visit the WindowsUpdate website every 3 months or so.
1USA Subscribers who have Macintosh computers should goto WWW.Microsoft.Com and click on Downloads on the blue menubar.
