Storms and your computer |
|
| During the spring and summer, we receive calls from our customers whose
computer hardware is inoperable after the storms. This is due to power surges. Here is some handy information that
can help you prevent your computer from malfunctioning due to a power surge. Power surges are sudden, powerful increases in voltage and, while lightning is a major cause, there are many other causes such as ice storms, high winds, trees falling on power lines, car-pole crashes, and even day-to-day operations like turning the air conditioner on and off, et cetera. These surges can be especially damaging to computer equipment -- causing data loss, memory failure, and equipment malfunction. So, how can you protect your equipment? - When a storm arrives, unplug your computer and modem until the storm passes. - Consider installing an Uninterruptible Power Supply which has a battery in it. Prices have come down in recent years. - If you don't want a UPS, at least have a Surge Protector power strip with a phone plug in it. - Make sure your outlets are properly grounded. An Electrician may need to be called. |
