We've found that some computers will not connect to the internet unless a DNS is specified in the Control Panel
> Network section.
The problem:
Microsoft Windows is usually intelligent enough to figure out how to connect, but sometimes it gets confused
depending on which Networking components were installed by the Computer Dealer when you purchased the machine.
No, you don't want to remove any of the Networking components unless your ISP advises which ones to remove. Since
they all inter-relate, removing one component may affect the performance of the others.
Each version of Windows is slightly different.
There are 3 versions of Windows 95 and 2 versions of Windows 98, Windows
Millennium, plus ServicePaks for each one.
Windows NT 4.0 has been replaced by Windows 2000 in March 2000. Each of these has a slightly different "kernel".
Microsoft said that they will upgrade all these different versions to one single "kernel" in year 2004.
If your computer periodically gives you the error message that says "Dialup Networking could not negotiate
a compatible set of network protocols..." it means that it's confused.
The solution is to let the 1USA CD-ROM setup insert the correct values
- in Dialup Networking folder > 1USA.COM icon > Server Types tab
- in Control Panel > Networks > Dialup Adapter > Bindings
- in Control Panel > Networks > TCP/IP Dialup Adapter
Sometimes a more stable connection can be made if you manually insert the IP address of a DNS server into Control
Panel > Networks > TCP/IP Dialup Adapter.
Click on the DNS Configuration Tab
Insert your computer's name in the Host field
Your ISP will provide you with an IP address for the appropriate DNS server, then click on the Add button. (putting
in any other IP address will cause problems).
Your ISP will walk you through this procedure. If your ISP doesn't offer this necessary service, then you might
want to consider joining 1USA.
