1. "56k" modems RECEIVE at up to 53.3k, normally 42k or 44k according
to tests by various magazines.
2. Some, not all, "56k" modems still TRANSMIT at 28,8 or 33,6, depending on the modem. Check the modem's
MANUAL to see what it says about 'fallback speeds'. Some manuals say 33,600 and others are 28,800 which is uncompressed.
Compressed speed on a 28,800 connection would give an effective speed of 57,600.
3. Most ISP's display the speed from the server to you. 1USA displays the speed from
you to the server - so that, if necessary, we can determine if any phone
line problems exist between your house, the pole and your telephone company..
4. After checking the modem book, if it says that your regular TRANSMIT speed should be 33,6, then if it's fallback
speed is an uncompressed 28,800 or lower to 26,400, then I would say that the phone line from the house to the
pole needs a <verizon> lineman to look at it. The ONLY way to check is to install the other modem again and
see if the TRANSMIT speeds change.
Here's some info from the phone company:
Your 56k modem has to operate with the traditional analog local loop which has been optimized
for voice traffic. This optimization actually impedes data traffic, and your 56k modem must now be responsible for
compensating for the telco's human speech optimization of a voice call.
56k modems must be intelligent enough to differentiate between the maximum signal levels (up to 255 discrete levels)
of a 56K connection, synchronize with the local telco switch, compensate for digital loss, determine if voice PADs
are present, and handle whatever noise is present on the phone line. For all of these
reasons, it is the quality of the phone line and the brand of your 56K modem that ultimately determines the connect
speed.
56K & V.90 modems operate asymmetrically (56k receive / 33,6k transmit)
V.92 modems operate symmetrically or asymetrically -- meaning that the transmit speed tries to negotiate the same
speed as the receiving side.
As you can tell, the people at 1USA.Com have lots of technical expertise to help determine where a connection problem
exists.
We take the time to help each 1USA Subscriber get the best speeds possible.
